Games With Songs That Will Make You Raise The Music Volume

Nowadays, I find that too many games have samey-music that complements the action without intruding - great background music with little-to-no personality.

These games in this stack are the opposite: the songs are so good you'll want to delay saving the world just to listen a bit more to it.

All the PS2 Ace Combat games have amazing soundtracks, so you cannot go wrong with any of them. In fact, of that trilogy, Zero is my least-liked entry.

Yet I chose it because of a single song: Zero.

As good as all the pieces in the trilogy are, if I had to pick a single winner, it's definitely this one. It's worth playing the game just for hearing this song in its original context.

Although the Dragon's Dogma soundtrack in general is quite subdued, fitting mostly in that "unintruding background music" category, there are 2 songs that deserve mentioning, depending of the game's version.

For the original release, it's "Into Free - Dangan". Yeah, it's a pop-rock song for a fantasy-medieval game. Absolutely out of its element, and all the better for it.

However, that amazing opening song was removed from the Dark Arisen version, which is a shame. On the plus side, we go the amazing "Coils of Light". Can't have the cake and eat it too...

Anyway, the wind is pushing me onto the next item.

Some people joke that the Guilty Gear games are just a bonus to the soundtrack. And while they're great fighting games, the music is really just that good. If you like that style of pop/rock, this soundtrack is just as good as any band out there.

But if I had to pick one song, I'd go with "The Disaster of Passion". Totsugeki!

Why the "Character Action" games have such great songs? Like Guilty Gear, this soundtrack only has winner songs, making for an amazing rock/metal album that just puts you right in that "I can cut everything" mindset.

The most popular song in the album is probably "Rules of Nature", but my 2 cents is that the best one is the theme of best-boy Jetstream Sam, "The Only Thing I Know For Real".
Honorable mention for "Hot Wind Blowing", a song for a DLC that is just as good as anything else from the base game.

Ah, Nier. A budget action-rpg that most people didn't care about, yet it has an absolutely bitching-crazy story, and probably the best soundtrack of the seventh generation of consoles (that's the PS3/Xbox 360 generation).

You can't go wrong with the Nier soundtrack, just pick a song and listen to it. Or, even better, just play the game!

Sonic's games have been quite hit-or-miss since becoming 3D. The soundtracks, however, are usually great, with some upbeat pop-rock-ska-ish songs (with vocals, a rarity in most videogame soundtracks) from Crush40.

Sonic Adventure 2 has plenty of catch ear-worms, but "Live and Learn" is probably everyone's favorite (and mine as well).

I could probably write an entire stack with just songs from Nintendo games - hell, I could do it just with Zelda games - but to make the list shorter and less predictable, I'll pick a single one, that has drilled a hole into my mind ever since I've heard it for the first time: the original rendition of Lost Woods.
