The Company section of the database stores information about the various companies involved in the gaming industry, like developers, support studios, publishers, IP holders, hardware makers and more.

The aim of this section is simplicity rather than completeness - for example, many larger companies are organized into complex hierarchies of holdings and subsidiaries, located in remote corners of the Earth for tax purposes or legal reasons. We leave all these gruesome details to wikipedia, and work more with the "general idea" of a company.

Here are some rules to help keep company data-keeping simple:

Don't bother writing that the company's name is XYZ Entertainment Limited Co Group, just use XYZ - that's probably how everyone knows it.

(2) Disregard holding groups and shell companies

If a company is technically a subsidiary to a holding, ignore the existence of the holding - that is, add only one company instead of adding a holding and then adding the actual company as a subsidiary to the holding.

If you care about it, you can mention the holding (or other bureaucratic, related companies or non-gaming subsidiaries) in the "About" section.

Some companies have headquarters in tax havens to avoid paying taxes - we don't care about those. Use the location of the main office, where all the decisions are likely taking place.

(4) Merges are a continuation rather than a new company

If two companies merge, instead of marking both companies as closed and creating a new company, we add one company's contents to another and delete the first - usually the largest or oldest company is used as the base.

The founding dates of each company, as well as the date of the merger, should be mentioned in the "About" section.
