Originally called Homeworld: Cataclysm, it was renamed to Homeworld: Emergence in 2017, when it was re-released by GOG, as the name Cataclysm was trademarked by Blizzard Entertainment for its third expansion of World of Warcraft.

It was meant to be an expansion to the original Homeworld, but was eventually released as a stand-alone sequel.
